2008-2009 Team FSM Rock n' Roll Marathoners!

Here's what Ian Feldman, 2009 PF Chang's full-marathon finisher, had to say about his training experience:

On our way to the the first morning of the running group, the delicious irony of me not being a "runner" yet me being in a "running group" struck me as comical.  As we made our way through the pouring rain to Foothills Sports Therapy, all the while thinking, "they can't possibly be running today," but needless to say, as we entered the parking lot, over 80+ people were dressed and ready to go. As the group all began to run the surrounding city streets my wife made her way to the head of the pack, and me, the trotter, took up position in the back, assuming this would be yet another solo run. To my surprise, there was every level, age, size and shape of runner out there and at that moment I knew this group would be the group for us.  Along the run I met Lori, the coach and leader of the group who was nothing less than encouraging and enthusiastic.  I also ended up meeting a group of other trotters like me, who were "not your typical runners". This solid group of 5 runners became our own running group within a running group. Not only were we holding each other accountable, we were also there to cheer each other on and provide the much needed encouragment to help each other reach our goals of finishing. Needless to say, with my running coach, Lori, and my running pack, I completed yet another half marathon!  Yet, this time, when I finished, I didn't think about never doing another race, I instead wondered when the next would be and thirsted for the post race party with all of my running friends. You see, this is not only a group of runners but also a group that likes to also celebrate our accomplishments together.

As the time came for the running group to begin in 2008, I knew that this year I would be going for the full marathon. Although the mere idea of the full marathon made me cringe with the anticipated agony, I knew that with the support of this group and the encouraging coaching that I had recieved the previous year, that I would be able to complete my goal of the full marathon. I am not going to say it was easy, or that it didn't require hard work and dedication, yet when you are amongst friends, all heading toward the same goal, the task at hand seems to be much easier.  Now that I have met my goal of the marathon, I realize that the journey would not have been as gratifying had my friends, coach, and wife not been there for every step to help me acheive something I never thought conceivable. On January 18th, 2009, I not only achieved my goal of finishing but I now consider myself a runner, a Marathoner.
